THE STORY OF TRENT PEHRSON AND THE IDRANI LANGUAGE Where did Trent M. Pehrson get the ideas for his constructed language? It began long ago. In fact, the development of Idrani orthography predates the development of the language. The first script originated as a characteral code in which to write English. Tired of being humiliated each time his third grade teacher intercepted and read one of his notes, the designer of the Idrani language, Trent Pehrson, and his class mates began using a cypher script to prevent their teacher's encroachment. Unfortunately, Trent and his third grade coconspirators soon realized that their efforts had only encouraged their note-hating teacher. To him, they were nothing more than entertaining cryptograms- tantalizing him with the reward of embarrassing his clandestine pupils upon decryption. So, Trent countered his teacher, using graphical delimiters in his code instead of spaces, creating new characters for common digraphs and writing his coded notes more phonetically. But these measures merely baited Trent's teacher who found the increased challenge even more palatable. With unwavering determination, Trent decided that only the encryption of language itself would bring true victory. And so, in the tempest of this rivalry, the Idrani language was born. Eventually, Trent's cohorts lost interest in the complexity of his encryption After all, it had begun to smack of study- growing dangerously near the realm of homework. But for Trent, the 'conlang-hook' was set. The dreaded, all consuming philology gene had been activated. Idrani continued to develop as Trent studied English grammar in junior high school and then foreign languages in high school (Latin, Russian and Spanish). Each of these language courses brought new ideas and deposited their seasonings in the developing grammar, lexicon and orthography of Idrani. During this same period, the influences of various motion pictures in the science fiction genre had enormous influence on the cultural creativity related to the language as well as orthographic influences. Following high school graduation, Trent lived in Finland as a service missionary and representative of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, where he learned to love the people, culture and language of Finland. The Finnish language had a major influence on Idrani--especially in the realm of lexicon and adpositional morphemes. Upon returning from Finland, Trent found the most wonderful lady on the globe and actually convinced her to marry him. He Intensified his study of the scribal arts which, in turn, lead to a study of ancient Mayan and Egyptian writing systems and of the Mandarin language. All of this was accompanied by the commencement of formal university instruction in computational linguistics at Brigham Young University. Each of these major changes in Trent's life brought beauty and an insurgence of ideas to Idrani, which by this time was becoming an extension of Trent himself-- an individual art form. With marriage, came the joys of children and family. The experiences of such brought new beauty to Idrani by infusing it with the considerations of endearing words, genealogy, names, lingual heritage and the role of language in the family. During his university studies, Trent studied Mandarin formally for two years and independently studied Navajo (Dine Bizad). These languages were rich and beautiful to Trent-- Mandarin for its writing system rich in symbology, history and calligraphic tradition and Navajo for its rich and unique grammar, phraseology and culture. Next to Finnish, Navajo and Mandarin played the greatest roles in the continued shaping of the language, as well as the emerging cultural philosophies which were beginning to solidify. Trent also began formal study of theoretical linguistics and computer science and conducted several research activities in the realm of linguistics. This prompted new experimentation with Idrani related to the thresholds of language in the human brain. This fascination corresponded with Trent's discovery of Gene Rodenberry's Earth Final Conflict featuring a very interesting fictional species called Taelons and their strange and dynamic language called Eunoia. Though Trent quickly lost interest in the series, the idea of a dynamic language coresponded with Trent's experiments related to human language thresholds and he began to push Idrani to test the limits of human language. Toward the end of Trent's undergraduate work, threshold experimentation with Idrani ended and the language was brought back to a more human equilibrium at which time Trent recorded a series of legends using calligraphic methods and created several other artifacts. And so, we arrive at the current state of the language. Finally, after more than 24 years of change, seasoning and construction Idrani is a stable language (with the exception of its orthography) and so, can be recorded herein.
